Welcome to the department of Mechanical and Aerospace
Engineering (MAE). MAE is in the Irwin
and Joan Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of
California, San Diego (UCSD). We are a large
interdisciplinary engineering department with
approximately 1300 undergraduate students, 235 graduate
students and 40 faculty. Although the MAE
department was founded only relatively recently (1964),
our educational program and laboratory and computational
facilities are outstanding and supported by a dedicated
staff and great research faculty. We are proud of
our achievements in education, research and
outreach.
The department offers ABET accredited undergraduate
majors in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, as well as majors in
Environmental Engineering and Engineering Science.
Our undergraduate curricula combine courses which
provide a strong intellectual training in basic science
and engineering with real-world applications. There
are ample opportunities for undergraduates to develop
professional skills and to participate in research.
Our graduates have found entry in all engineering
disciplines, and are sought after by employers
nationwide.
At the graduate level, we stress a broad engineering
science preparation together with specialization in a
variety of advanced research areas. Areas of
particular strength are Combustion and Energy, Dynamic
Systems and Control, Fluid Mechanics, and Solid Mechanics
and Materials. The department is heavily involved
in interdisciplinary research through the Center for
Energy Research, the Materials Science Program and the
Environment and Sustainability Initiative.
Questions about research should be addressed to an
MAE faculty (link to faculty tab) member in your area of
interest or you can contact me (mae-chair-l@ucsd.edu).
We welcome inquires about our undergraduate (admissionsinfo@ucsd.edu)
and graduate programs (mae-gradadm-l@ucsd.edu),
and we will be happy to assist you.
Sincerely,
Paul Linden
Chair of the Department
