Biological Motility: Molecules and Mechanochemistry
Life is almost synonymous with autonomous movement. I will discuss some examples that highlight the varied mechanisms that nature has invented to accomplish movement on a range of length and time scales, from the collective behavior of macromolecular assemblies and molecular motors at the cellular level, to the water and muscle driven movements in fungi, plants and animals. I will also try to highlight some extremes in motility at different scales that raise the question of how well designed (from an engineering perspective) these evolutionary stumbles are and end with the question of what/if we can learn a thing or two from these biological solutions?
